A long-planned-for upgrade to our 5-year-old streaming video infrastructure and software, sold to the business as a 9-month project, had finally been approved. However, a 4-month hard deadline (I called it a drop-deadline) was mandated. The project manager who had designed and shepherded the project from day one resigned, since he could not see a way to deliver a 9-month project in such a limited timeframe. I had worked near his team, but never with it, so I needed to educate myself in a hurry on the technology and the new vendor, introduce myself to the business customers and technicians. While communicating thoroughly with all constituencies and meeting regularly to cheerlead and steer my team, I worked with purchasing to negotiate a contract with the vendor, received buy-in from network managers and their staffs, pushed to upgrade 80,000 global desktops with the required software, and delivered the project in time for the CEO’s annual employee presentation.
